Peer Movement

A group of people who are becoming more relevant to the mental health recovery process are peer supports because they have lived experiences of mental illness. Although the peer support group is often overlooked or under utilized, peers are just as vital to mental health recovery process as the professionals.

The peer support movement is really about peers supporting one another by promoting the message that “you are not alone in this”. Knowing that someone has gone through the same struggles, as you can really be helpful to someone who is beginning their recovery from mental illness.

The peer support services that are available are: support groups, peer run programs, and events related to peer-to-peer awareness. Peers are an important part of the mental health world because they give researchers an internal perspective on what it takes to recover from a mental illness.

Today, peers are becoming the top advocates for mental health recovery. The peer movement involves advocating, spreading awareness, and working towards erasing the stigma. Mental health care has come a long way but we still have a long way to go. Though the help of peers, professionals and caregivers, we can recover and we can eliminate the stigma.

Listen to my podcast Anxious Ramblings!

In this episode I’m going to be introducing the Peer Movement! The guest for this episode is Jayne from the UK. She is going to tell us about her mental illness as well as the process she went through when trying to get disability benefits. I will also share some mental health awareness events for the month of October.
